Method, sources and limitations

Everything on this site comes from one public dataset. Here is which one, when it was taken, and where it stops.

Source

The Ministry of Education School Directory, published on data.govt.nz under CC BY 4.0. Extract taken 2026-08-06. Roll figures are the Jul 2026 count.

What is included

2,565 schools with a status of “Open”. Schools recorded as closed or merged are excluded — a page for a school that no longer exists sends a parent to a shut gate. 2,483 have an Equity Index; the 82 that do not are private schools, for which the Ministry publishes none.

Year levels are derived, not published

The directory does not carry a year-level range. The ranges shown are the standard spans for each Ministry school type. For specialist schools, teen parent units and activity centres, spans vary by student and none is shown rather than a guess.

Ethnicity is total response

A student who identifies with more than one ethnicity is counted in each group, so the groups sum to more than the roll. Each figure on this site is shown as that group's share of the roll, never as a slice of a pie. Groups under five students are shown as “<5” and are not drawn, so no figure can identify a child.

Zones are not drawn and addresses are not checked

The Ministry's zone boundary dataset is explicitly documented as low-resolution and unfit for spatial queries against property boundaries. This site therefore records only whether a school operates a scheme, and links to the official zone finder. There is no address checker and there will not be one.

The Equity Index

Shown only on a school's own page, always with its explanation attached, never in a sortable list and never as a colour. See what EQI means.

Refresh

Rebuilt from a fresh extract monthly. Reviewed Aug 2026.

Corrections

If a detail about your school is wrong here, it is almost certainly wrong in the Ministry's directory too — the fastest fix is to update it there, and it will flow through at the next refresh. Tell us anyway and we will look.
